Narratives of Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum

This panel aims to examine and compare from an interdisciplinary perspective how transnational works of literature, cinema, and theater portray pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences in contemporary society.
We welcome papers that engage with novels, graphic novels, memoirs, essays, cross-genre texts, poems, manuals, films, documentaries, and plays, among others, that address a variety of topics that include but are not limited to maternal desire, ambivalence, surrogacy, abortion, pregnancy loss, trauma, perinatal depression, and empowerment through childbirth.

The panel examine how contemporary narratives of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum seek to defy outdated stereotypes, break taboos, overcome trauma, empower, and inform by bringing new light to reproductive experiences in today society.
