Call for Papers: Trauma-Informed Pedagogy and Policies in the English Department
Extended Deadline: 27 March 2023

In our current moment, department chairs must consider how trauma and traumatic events impact the daily lives of students, faculty, staff, and ultimately departments and institutions. Chairs themselves might wish to be aware of the effect of trauma on the fulfillment of their professional roles, particularly after several years of leading during a pandemic. This session focuses on the ways trauma-informed pedagogy and policies can be deployed compassionately and effectively in English departments, and how chairs can support colleagues and students wishing to advocate for trauma-informed approaches within the department and beyond.

Prospective speakers might consider the following questions:

  • How can program leaders in English develop trauma-informed policies and support trauma-informed pedagogy?
  • What do chairs need to know to support the design and implementation of trauma-informed policies and to serve as advocates?
  • How can leaders educate faculty and staff and create department-wide cultures that recognize trauma of students and teachers?

We invite 250-word abstracts on these questions and others that center trauma-informed pedagogy and policies from scholars, instructors, and practitioners in English and related fields. Please send submissions to Janine M. Utell from the Modern Language Association (jutell@mla.org) no later than Monday, 20 March 2023.
