Medusa: Essays on Different Media

This call for papers seeks chapters on Medusa for a volume intended for the series, Villains and Creatures.

Each chapter of the volume is intended to be an overview of depictions of Medusa in specific kinds of media; nevertheless, the arguments/theses of each individual chapter should still be original, using past works and research to develop a current (new) perspective on Medusa.

The proposed sections and chapters follow.

Section I: Mythology and Literature

Mythology and Folklore: This section will review the main mythology and folklore associated with Medusa.

Literary Fiction: This chapter will review appearances and mentions of Medusa in literary fiction.

Children’s and Young Adult Literature: This chapter will review appearances and mentions of Medusa in children’s and young adult literature.

Fanfiction: This chapter will consider fanfiction written about Medusa.

Section II: Visual Arts, Monuments, and Physical Structures

Paintings: This chapter will provide an overview and analysis of the main themes in paintings of Medusa.

Decorative Arts: This chapter will examine Medusa as she appears in decorative arts.

Buildings, Tombs, Stelae: Due to the importance of buildings, tombs, moments, and stelae in the ancient world, depictions of Medusa on physical structures and monuments will be considered here.

Section III: Music and the Performing Arts

Plays and Theater (Ancient): Plays and productions in the ancient world involving Medusa will be reviewed in this chapter.

Plays and Theater (Modern): Modern plays and productions depicting Medusa will be reviewed here.

Music (Classical and/or Modern): Music used to signify Medusa or that accompanies visual presentations of Medusa will be assessed in this chapter.

Section IV: Film, Television, and Digital Media

Film: The main themes and appearances of Medusa in film will be assessed in this chapter.

Television: The main themes and appearances of Medusa in television will be assessed in this chapter.

Video Games: The primary depictions of Medusa in video games will be considered in this chapter.

Roleplaying Games: The primary depictions of Medusa in roleplaying games will be considered in this chapter.

Section V: The Medusa Miscellany

Symbols, Heraldry, Mascots, Toys, etc.: Any other unique media or appearances of Medusa that contributors could consider will be included in this section.

This section does have an opportunity for multiple chapters based on the item(s) being discussed.

Chapters will be due in April 2025. Chapters should be approximately 5,000 to 7,000 words, with Chicago-style endnotes and a bibliography page.
