The Department of French Language and Literature, the Theory and Practice of Discourse
Research Centre and the Department of English, the Interface Research Centre of the Original
and Translated Text - Cognitive and Communicative Dimensions of the Message (LITCIL) of the
Faculty of Letters, under the patronage of "Dunarea de Jos" University of Galati, Romania
organise on September 19-21, 2024, the international symposium Traduire les culturèmes:
paris et défis/The Challenge of Translating Culture-specific Elements
The symposium aims to bring together specialists, researchers and teachers from the
humanities and language sciences (philology, translation studies, linguistics) to reflect on the
culture-specific elements paradigm from the perspective of translation studies and cultural
studies.
We welcome papers and workshop proposals in French/English/Romanian as source or
target languages and encourage comparative analyses between specialist language pairs.
The symposium will take place over three days, from September 19 to 21, 2024.
Thematic areas include literary and specialised translation, and interdisciplinary approaches to
culture-specific elements, that have a reputation for untranslatability, both in theory and practice.
We intend to highlight the kaleidoscopic facets of the culture-specific elements paradigm and the
socio-cultural, intellectual, and affective implications configured by the realia specific to each
country and cultural space. We will reflect on the meanings and effects that impact on cultural
realities in the affirmation of the cultural and collective imago, hybridity and otherness of the
translating and translated subject.
The interdisciplinary areas of literature and translation studies will revolve around literary translation (and culture-specific elements in particular) and specialised translation. Focus will be laid on: ? cultural themes relating to civilisation (historical and geographical notions, etc.); ? foreign vs. native in the translation of culture-specific elements; ? ethnocentrism in literary translation ; ? cultural worldviews in literary translation; ? structuring matrices in specialised translation, carrying strict referentiality and rhizomatic identity; ? dilemmas, choices, and strategies in the translation of culture-specific elements; ? common and specific translation strategies, techniques and processes; ? translation paradigms in the 21st century: reflections and opportunities. Literary and non-literary translators, beginners and experienced, affiliated with professional associations/organisations/institutions, academics, researchers, college professors, and doctoral and master’s students whose research or teaching activities focus on translation and translation studies in the broadest sense of the term are invited to participate with papers in the thematic areas indicated above. The axes are not restrictive, and any specific proposal that is not strictly literary, inter- or multi-disciplinary, is welcome if justified. Partners:

There is no conference fee. The coffee breaks are provided by “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati and the organisers. Travel and accommodation expenses, as well as any visa formalities, are the exclusive responsibility of the participants, although local assistance will always be available.
The languages of the symposium are French, English, and Romanian. Conference calendar:
• June 25, 2024 - Call for Papers/Participation;
• August 1, 2024 - submission of proposals;
• August 15, 2024 - notification of acceptance;
• September 1 - provisional programme;
• September 19-21, 2024 - symposium;
• December 1, 2024 - articles sent to reviewers for scientific evaluation;
• March 2025 - publication of proceedings in volume.
After the double-blind peer review, a selection of articles will be published in the scientific journal Translation Studies – Retrospective and Prospective Views, indexed in relevant international databases.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is August 1st 2024.
Proposals will include:

surname, first name and institutional affiliation;

thematic area;
-
a 300-word summary of the project, including the objective, the research question, the originality of the research and the expected outcomes;

3-5 keywords;
-
a selective bibliography for the proposed research (3-5 titles);
-
a biographical note presenting the speaker (max.10 lines)

agreement/willingness to publish the paper: YES/NO
Communications The time allotted to each presentation is 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion/questions. Papers will be organised into thematic sections. The symposium will be held at the Faculty of Letters (AS building) 111, Domneasc? St, Gala?i.
Preference is given to papers defended in situ; remote or hybrid synchronous participation is also possible in special cases.
