We are pleased to announce the Young Researchers’ Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences 2024 to be organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIEST, Shibpur from 9th December 2024-13th December 2024 in hybrid mode. The conference aims to provide a platform for emerging scholars to showcase their research, engage in intellectual exchange, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the dynamic fields of Humanities and Social Sciences. Further, this conference seeks to foster a supportive environment where young researchers can receive constructive feedback, and network with peers and established academics.
Humanities and Social Sciences research is continually evolving, and several emerging areas are gaining traction as scholars explore new ways to understand human experience, culture, and society. We invite submissions on a wide range of topics within the humanities and social sciences. Potential themes include, but are not limited to:
1. Digital Humanities:
a. Data Analysis and Visualization: Using computational tools to analyse and visualize historical texts, art, and cultural data.
b. Text Mining and NLP: Applying natural language processing to study literary patterns, authorship attribution, and historical texts.
c. Digital Archives and Preservation: Creating and maintaining digital archives to preserve and provide access to historical documents and artefacts.
2. AI and Humanities:
a. AI-Assisted Research: Exploring how AI tools can aid in textual analysis, language translation, and the creation of new forms of digital art.
b. Ethics of AI: Studying the impact of AI on human identity, labour, and creativity, and addressing ethical concerns related to AI’s role in society.
c. The politics of AI: Analysing the state-managed response to regulate AI technologies to ensure safety, accountability, and transparency and addressing potential displacement of jobs by AI-driven automation, which has sparked broader discussions about the future of work.
3. Environmental Humanities:
a. Eco-Criticism: Analysing literature and media to understand human responses to environmental changes and climate crisis.
b. Environmental Sociology: Analysing the social impacts of climate change, including how it disproportionately affects marginalized communities and strategies for climate justice. Further, understanding how different societies approach sustainability, resource use, and environmental conservation.
4. Global and Transnational Studies:
a. Legacy of Colonialism in Global Contexts: Investigation of how historical colonial practices have influenced contemporary globalization and perpetuation of neocolonial practices where economic and political inequalities are maintained or exacerbated.
b. Cultural Hybridity and Global Flows: Analysing how cultural exchanges that result in hybrid identities and practices both challenge and reinforce (neo)colonial histories and power structures.
c. From Global to Glocal: Examining the relocation of crisis of global capitalism by highlighting the interconnectedness of local contexts with global systems.
5. Philosophy and Technology:
a. Ethics of Emerging Technologies: Addressing philosophical questions about the implications of new technologies on human values, privacy, and ethics.
b. Philosophy of Information: Exploring the nature of information, knowledge, and communication in the digital age.
c. Society, Science and Technology: Focusing on the evolving opportunities and challenges arising from the interplay between society, science, and technology in the twenty-first century.
6. Urban Studies and Humanities:
a. Urban Culture: Exploring how urban environments influence and are reflected in cultural production. This includes examining how cities are represented in literature, film, and art, and how cultural practices shape urban spaces.
b. Public Art and Space: Understanding the ways in which public art and urban aesthetics can illuminate how art and design contribute to the cultural and social fabric of cities, and how these elements impact residents’ experiences of public spaces.
c. Critical Urban Studies: Focusing on interdisciplinary approach to urban studies, from Lewis Mumford to Edward Soja and beyond, and perspectives and responses to these theories from the Global South.
7. Public Humanities:
a. Community Engagement: Applying humanities and social science research to engage with communities and address local issues through public programs, exhibitions, and outreach.
b. Advocacy and Policy: Using humanities and social science insights to influence public policy and social advocacy on issues such as social justice, education, and cultural heritage.
8. Posthumanism and New Materialism:
a. Posthumanism: Investigating how human identity and agency are redefined in the context of technology, animals, and the environment.
b. New Materialism: Reconceptualizing the role of materiality and physicality in shaping human experiences and cultural practices.
9. Sociology and the Evolving World:
a. Digital Sociology: Exploring social media dynamics and investigating virtual communities, their social structures, and their impact on offline behaviour and relationships.
c. Health and Medicine: Investigating how social factors such as socioeconomic status, race, and environment affect health include mental health outcomes and access to healthcare. Also, analysing the social effects of pandemics, including public health responses, social behaviour changes, and economic impacts.
d. Intersectionality and Identity: Studying how multiple social identities (e.g., race, gender, class, sexuality) intersect and affect individuals’ experiences and social outcomes. Particularly focusing on exploring experiences related to non-normative gender identities, sexual orientations, and other forms of identity that challenge traditional categories.
Submission Guidelines:
Abstract Submission: Please submit a 250-300 word abstract outlining the objectives, methodology, and significance of your research. Include your name, institutional affiliation, and contact information.
Full Paper Submission: Selected abstracts will be invited to submit full papers. Papers should be between 4000-6000 words, formatted according to MLA 9th Edition/APA 7th Edition.

Review Process: Proposals will be selected based on originality, relevance, and quality.

Postgraduate Students presenting in-person: Rs 2000
PhD Scholars presenting in-person: Rs 2500
Early Career Professionals (Postdoc and faculty members) presenting in-person: Rs 3000
Postgraduate Students presenting in online mode: Rs 1000
PhD Scholars presenting in online mode: Rs 1500
Early Career Professionals (Postdoc and faculty members) presenting in online mode: Rs 2000
