Caribbean Communities: Island and Diasporas at Home and Abroad (NEMLA)
Newport, RI
Organization: NeMLA
Event: NEMLA
Communities across the Caribbean are not exclusively defined by a shared territory, a shared language, or national identities. Each one of the regions of the Caribbean is traversed by a rich blend of cultural practices and complex sociopolitical realities that often distort and challenge traditional lines of affiliation. At home or at the diaspora, Caribbean communities are created and sustained through efforts of collaboration and support that often times challenge and bypass traditionally sanctioned channels. This board sponsored panel aims to create a space of dialogue for scholars from different area studies (Spanish, French, English, and others) who explore the myriads of ways in which the networks of community are built and sustained across the Caribbean. We invite contributions that explore from the variegated literatures, cinema, and cultural productions of the Caribbean.
This is board-sponsored panel accepts presentations in English or Spanish.
