India's civilizational ethos is deeply rooted in its multilingual and multicultural fabric, where translation has enabled the circulation of ideas, texts, and knowledge across regions and traditions. Etymologically understood as "carrying across," translation in the 21st century extends beyond linguistic transfer to become a critical and interpretive practice.
A. K. Ramanujan, in his writings, draws attention to translation’s context-sensitive nature, while G. N. Devy highlights the complex linguistic and cultural histories within which translation operates in India. Seen in this light, translation involves negotiation, re-articulation, and the making of new meanings within specific cultural settings. Practices such as transcreation, adaptation, and interpretation highlight the creative potential of translation. At the same time, the increasing use of machine translation and AI-based tools has introduced another dimension, making translation faster and more accessible, while also raising questions about accuracy and interpretation.
In view of these varied contexts, practices, and concerns, this seminar aims to provide a platform for students, teachers, and researchers to reflect on the evolving role of translation in contemporary India across literary, academic, and everyday contexts. It seeks to bring together diverse perspectives on both the challenges and possibilities of translating Indian languages in the present day.
