BIG RED AND SHINY
Big Red & Shiny (www.bigredandshiny.org) is a web-based publication devoted to contemporary art writing in all its facets. Centered on the history, theory, and reception of contemporary art, we have published texts and criticism on a wide range of subjects, including architecture and performance, as well as interviews with a range of artists, curators, and program directors. Through our focus on the “local” art scene, we hope to elucidate major themes pertinent to contemporary art and the people and institutions that support it.
Run by a dedicated team of editors, we are seeking previously unpublished submissions from art writers of all kinds in hopes of bringing together the voices of academics, artists, critics, theorists, etc. While we seek submissions that are tied to Boston or New England, we are flexible on the writers’ home base, current academic status and publication history.
We are open to receiving submissions in a variety of formats, including essays, reviews and interviews. We run several series, including “Course Syllabi,” which focuses on the practice of teaching art; “Art for Breakfast,” a place for short reflections on single pieces of art; and “Boston Common,” an interview series with the people and institutions that shape Boston’s art community. Commissioned writers receive ongoing editorial support and an honorarium per submission. For more information on our guidelines, please see: http://bigredandshiny.org/contact/submissions/.
Submissions, in the form of abstracts or writing samples, can be sent through our online submission form here: http://bigredandshiny.org/online-submission-form-2/. If you prefer to contact an individual editor, you can find out more about us here:http://bigredandshiny.org/about/staff/.
